story:

In 1934, Edwin Armstrong presented FM radio to RCA, the world's largest manufacturer of AM radios, and parent company to the National Broadcasting Company, the world's largest AM radio network. What Armstrong hadn't expected was for RCA to lead a secret cartel dedicated to crippling FM radio and his invention due to having so heavily invested in AM and feared listeners would soon abandon it. Armstrong, nevertheless, persisted and built the first antenna, establishing his own FM station in Alpine, NJ -- and revolutionized the way we listen to radio today.
